Lack of sun exposure

Smiling sunSummer has arrived with a vengeance and there has been so much hype to do with over exposure to the sun that many people have been scared to venture into the sun for long periods, and many do not go out in the sun at all.

Using such scare monger tactics has actually been damaging our health as many of us are probably not getting anywhere near the amount of exposure to the sun which is our most efficient and direct source of Vitamin D. I had grown up with the understanding that this vitamin is one of the few which is not as effective in the form of a vitamin pill.

An article in the UK titled Sunbathing could boost your intellect and prevent dementia, has pointed out the importance of Vitamin D and improved mental agility although they do not condone basking in the sun.

My mother always instilled her philosophy of “everything in moderation.” That is a sensible approach in catching some daily sunlight and when exposing our skin to sun, to choose times when the sun is of lesser intensity.

Don’t be afraid, get out there and go for a short walk in the sun and top up your body with healthy Vitamin D from its most natural source.
