Different spin on exercise

Glowing Zebras Running

Exercise is a necessary part of life in order to stay fit and healthy and I have done a great deal of walking in my childhood through to early adulthood because I had no choice. There were no local public or private buses close to home and I had to walk 3 kms one way before I could catch a bus to go anywhere. My mother did not drive, nor did we have a second car even if she had been able to drive and my father commonly worked 6 days a week in those days. I was quite used to walking everywhere and do still enjoy it.

Jogging became my main form of exercise for the greater part of my early twenties when I decided it was too jarring on my joints and I returned to walking. I am fortunate that I have a high metabolism like my father so weight was never an issue with me and neither do I have to be too careful with my diet (well…maybe a little more these days)!

I did go to gym at some point in the early 1990′s which lasted about two years followed by a period of no regular daily exercise other than the occasional walk. I resumed gym membership around 2003 and continued until early 2007 when my membership finally expired.

My main difficulty with going to a gym is the time you have to set aside to get there, do your program and return home. I am not an early morning person and taking a big chunk out of my day any later than 9am is a problem to me. Going to the gym in the evening is not a favoured option either. And for at least 5 months of the year on the Gold Coast, the weather is hot and mostly humid which is not conducive for long walks in the fresh air unless I am prepared to get up very early to get it over and done with before the heat becomes unbearable. You could say I have a few conflicting issues when it boils down to regular exercise.

After my gym membership ended, I purchased some equipment for home so I could carry on with my weight training at my own leisure and I also have an exercise bike and an Airofit. Another problem arose, the Airofit takes time to do and does become a little repetitive and I felt that once I reached a certain level, I seemed to remain static without further improvement in terms of increasing or improving lung capacity and heart strength.

That became my incentive to research alternative exercise methods which I can easily and more effectively achieve in a home environment which will not take up too much of my time. I discovered some very interesting material by Dr. Al Sears on his PACE program. What he has to say about exercise has warranted my creating a separate blog post devoted entirely to his information on PACE – which stands for Progressively Accelerated Cardiopulmonary Exertion.

He has convinced me to give it a go and I started today, aiming to follow his program on a daily basis and improve my overall health.
